“The Island” is recognized as Opechancanough’s
headquarters
The
Opechancough marker stems
from an effort between the
Department of Historic Resources
and the Virginia Historical
Society with the Virginia
Indian community and the
Virginia Council to erect ten new
signs commemorating Virginia's
legacy of Virginia Indian
history.
“The site of Opechancanough's home on the Pamunkey River has
long been called The Island.”
