In the name of God Amen in the Year of our Lord
1631(1731), I Peter Goodwin of York, Hampton Parish in the County of York in Virginia being sound and perfect
mind and memory praised by God Revoking all former Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made do make
and declare this to be my last Will and Testament in Manner.
…I give
and bequeath unto my son Peter Goodwin my land in King William County known by
the name Warranuncock
Island (the Island Field). I give to my son James Goodwin his lifetime in half
the high ground of the
same within the swamp that is from the mouse trap path (The Causeway) of the
coming out of the Swamp
Streuss? across to the other Swamp to end of three hunds yards from the Spring
up the Swamp (Shop Spring Meadow) with
privilege in any of the swamp and low ground for the use of the plantation if himself will live upon it paying to his
brother half in the quick receipts.
So if Peter Goodwin wasn’t born until 1662, How could Herman
name the island as Guttins (Goodwin) island in 1670?
Peter had to have a father or grandfather who purchased
the Island from the Queen of the Pamunkeys after
the Massacre sometime between 1662 and 1670. The Island
is too small (150 acres of high land) for both a working
plantation and an Indian village.
